“The Lost Tapes” Series

Coming up on 5 years after the official split of Basic Operations (the legendary US outfit) Atlantic Connection & Kevin Focus have come full circle revamping the project and releasing a collection of previously unreleased material.

“The Lost Tapes” series features those tunes you heard, wanted but could never get your hands on. Tracks like “Drifting on an Aspect VIP” (the original being featured on Liquid V’s first Club Sessions EP) which graced the sets of DJs like A.I, Bailey & CPF for years after the original release to “Keep on Dreaming” which was originally slated for Hospital Records but pulled last minute as Basic Ops split without notice.

Another heavy hitter was “New Dawn”, originally signed to Metalheadz, a rare cut only a select few of the top tier DJ’s ever had a copy of; and the massive “Since I’ve Seen You” which stayed on LTJ Bukems playlist for almost a year but never saw an official release.

These and more are being released in the “Lost Tapes” series with volume one dropping Tuesday exclusively via bandcamp.com. If you ever wanted to get your hands on these gems; now’s the time, the guys aren’t even sure they’ll leave these up for permanent download.
Watch out for brand new Basic Operations tracks; the dubplates are ready and going out to your favorite DJs soon.

RISE AMERICAS ARTIST SPOTLIGHT w/ STEREOTYPE

With momentum building behind the debut release of Rise Americas EP on Westbay Digital, I thought it only appropriate to highlight the incredible artists contributing to this project.
Kicking off is Miami based artist Stereotype. Rasied in hip hop, a well known promoter, Stereotype has extended his reach into the realm of production and to be honest, thankgod he did because his tunes are outta control. His collaboration w/ Will Miles titled "I Know Not Why" on Rise Americas Volume 1 is one of the highlight tracks on the EP for me, and just recently, I've signed another track of his for Volume 2. Just can't get enough...

Lets start at the top, when & How did you get into Drum&Bass?
ST: I only got into D&B recently. I'd say around 2003. A co-worker of mine at a music store played me a few things, mostly techy stuff. I was definitely feeling it. From there i just got online and started searching it out. Once i came across music from the likes of Calibre, High Contrast and Atlantic Connection i was truly hooked. What struck me was how D&B producers were able to combine beautiful melodies and soulful samples with the brute force of breakbeats and basslines.

How did you get into production? Was it Drum&Bass that sparked that interest or have you always been interested in making opposed to just listening?
ST: I've always been in love with music. In high school i would freestyle over instrumental tapes in smoked out hallways and cars. I loved poetry and I loved writing, however I'm a pretty low key person and being behind the scenes as a producer definitely appealed to me. One day I was reading The Source magazine and there was an article interviewing several well known Hip-Hop producers. I remember Pete Rock talking about how you really didn't need all kinds of expensive gear to get started. He mentioned a few small pieces of gear and basically said, it was way more important how you used your gear than the actual gear itself. I went straight to the local music store and my loving girlfriend agreed to co-sign on a store credit card with me. (Bless her soul) I bought a crappy little drum machine, a crappy little sampler and a Tascam 4-track recorder. That was about 9 years ago, and although it's been quite a bumpy and at times gloomy road, I've always known this is what i want to do with my life.

Where do you draw influence from and find inspiration?
ST: Growing up in Miami I've always been exposed to a vast array of cultures and musical styles. Bass has always been king around here. I was also very much into the Hip-Hop my cousins and friends were bringing down from New York and New Jersey. Golden era Hip-Hop if you will. D&B always felt like a smooth, natural extension of those styles for me. Honestly one of the things I love most about producing is when I'm able to take an experience or emotion from my life and translate that into music.

Whats next on the plate?
ST: Right now I'm most excited about my collab with Will Miles called "I Know Not Why" which will be featured on the 'Rise Americas' Vol. 1 EP on Westbay Digital. I just locked down one of my latest tunes for the 'Rise Americas' EP Vol 2 as well. I've also been working on an EP with Will. Apart from that I've got a tune with my long time collaborator Sopheye coming out on Sublife Recordings out of San Francisco. The flip of that release is a tune by another South Florida friend and colleague George Young. Got a few things scheduled for release on Urban Chemistry Recordings based out of Miami, and something due out on the Bassdrive's forthcoming label.

Any shouts or info you wanna hit us with?
ST: Definitely wanna let everyone know about Stank Love, which just so happens to be the premiere D&B event in Miami. We've been running almost a year and going strong. This month we will be holding our very first WMC edition and we've got a sick lineup in store. If you are in Miami for WMC you don't wanna miss this!!! It's going down Wednesday, March 24th at Jazid in Miami Beach. 1342 Washington Ave.

Known throughout the world as one of the hottest female MC’s in electronic music, Los Angeles based Julz the huntress has taken on a brand new endeavor; event coordination. She’s doing one of the freshest parties in LA at one of the biggest and most renowned venues in America, Vanguard. If you’ve ever spent more than 10 min in the presence of miss Julz, you’ll know her passion for theatrics and visual presentation, so coordinating a massive event (like the one we’re about to discuss) should come as no surprise, as it’s just another facet to this multi-talented individual.

On March 4th, 2010 Julz the huntress presents 25 to Life, a multi-genre, multi-visual, multi-theatrical event held at Hollywood’s massive venue, Vanguard. 25 to Life will feature 9 DJ’s of top caliber, 3 dance performances by some of LA’s most in demand choreographers, live art installations, 1 live band and a host of musical vibes including dubstep, house, hip hop, reggae and more… We took a few min to sit down w/ Julz to get specifics on this event and also what goes into coordinating a project of this scale.

Julz, thanks for taking the time, so lets start at the beginning, how did this event come about?
Julz: My good friend laurel hit me up about a month ago to help her coordinate an anniversary party for a recording studio in Hollywood. The studio (Westbeach Recorders) is celebrating their 25th year in business and wanted to throw a blow out bash. It’s the recording studio across from the Vanguard in Hollywood-next thing you know they booked the Vanguard for the event- I was given the green light to do my thing and I’ve been runnin with it ever since.

What made you decide to incorporate such multi-media when you could just book a few big DJ’s and call it a day?
Julz: Having the freedom to utilize the space and the stage is the inspiration. I always like to push the envelope when creating a visual and creating a memory. This was the perfect opportunity to do just that. Laurel and I brainstormed on a lot of ideas and because both of us have a dance/choreography background it was important to us that we make it really special and incorporate many forms of media and performance.

In our personal discussions, you’ve expressed your desire to create large scale theatrical events, do you think this is a vision coming to fruition?
Julz: Yes! Having the opportunity to produce something at such a great venue has been amazing. I’ve been able to put on some cool shows through the years but this is definitely the most hands on I’ve been with all aspects of an event. I’m really excited about the fashion shows- combining dance, fashion and music. This is all heading in the direction of the bigger vision I have for Bass Brat Productions and my music.

How long does it take to plan an event like this & what stresses go into creating an event of this size?
Julz: It can take several months to plan something like this but we’ve managed to get it together in one month. Because of the time crunch I’ve pretty much been living eating and breathing this event for the past 4 weeks. Coordinating everyone’s schedules for rehearsals and meetings is probably the toughest part. I love it though…this is what I live for.

How many people are involved in bringing this vision to life, and what’s it like organizing all that?
Julz: Looking at my roster there are about 60 people involved in this production. That’s not including the sound engineers, lighting and security. I’ve had a few overwhelming moments but I also have a lot of great support and a great team to work with. I like to compare putting on a good show to cooking a good meal- Its all about timing and being able to work under pressure.

How has the club been in the development of your event? Supportive?
Julz: Laurel and Donell from Westbeach have done most of the communicating with the club so far but overall they seem pretty supportive. I think at first the venue was a bit shaky about the event because when the venue was booked we didn’t know what we were going to do yet... but now we have a lot of momentum and things are great.

Tell us more about the artists you have performing and creating, how did you choose them?
Julz: There are way to many artists to list but I will say this…All of them from the dj’s to the hair and makeup are friends of mine and are extremely talented. I chose them because they have a great energy and attitude. I am so grateful for the support they’ve all given me and can’t wait to see them do their thing on Thursday!

"Zero T started out back in 1998 as a fresh faced youngster at Dublin's now legendary Bassbin night. In late '99, just as his vinyl debut was dropping on the Bassbin imprint, 4hero signed some tracks that he and Beta 2 had made for Reinforced.

By 2001 releases were coming thick and fast on labels like Subtitles, Commercial Suicide, Function, Signature and Advanced and he was collaborating with producers such as Calibre, Alix Perez, Icicle, Bailey and vocalists like MC Conrad, Riya and Steo. Zero T moved to London in 2007 and released his debut album, Cheap Shots, on Total Science's CIA imprint in 2008.

After touring extensively right through to early 2009, Zero is now plotting his next steps. This includes releases on Subtitles, Shogun Audio, Good Looking, Liquid V and Integral, remixes of Slam's '93 techno classic Positive Education and up-and-coming bands One eskimO and All Thieves and launching his own label, Footprints. We spoke to Zero T to get the latest...

You're starting your own label Footprints, why now?
Probably the fact that I'm 30 this year! It was like a goal in life in general. Whatever I was doing, I wanted to be my own man by the time I'm 30.

Also, I love the fact that I can now sign anything I want and put it out. I just want to build up trust and make it a 'buy-on-sight' label as soon as possible. I want Footprints to cement my position in the drum & bass landscape as I still love the music so much.

Tell us more about the format of the "split" 12"s...
The format will generally be me on one side and someone else on the other. It means I only have to make one track per release and then I've got options for all sorts of tracks, from either well established friends or new producers, I really don't care.

I'll be trying to hit as many different levels with each 12". I want them to be balanced. I want one side to be what I consider something that's going to hurt a club and the flip might do the same or it could be just a piece of music I think is good that you may not even be able to play in a club. I hate all the sub categories in drum & bass but it's a natural inclination to group stuff together.

I used to love the whole 'anything goes' attitude in drum & bass in the 90s and I want to do my bit to get it back. I think electronic music in general is reverting back to the late 80s / early 90s unity when it was just viewed as dance music. The whole cross pollination with dubstep and the fact you have dubstep guys playing and making stuff at 170bpm and vice versa is great.

The more it all becomes blurred, undefinable UK bass music the better. People are now making music that you can't even say what it is any more but it doesn't matter because it's just a good tune. It's really exciting at the moment.

Why the name Footprints?
I was racking my brain for a long time for a good label name and it's hard. You need to be sure that it's a word, concept and identity that you're comfortable with when you're 50. I've already got a name I picked when I was 15 that's slightly embarrassing!

With Footprints though, I was coming back from the shops with Jubei and it had been snowing. I looked down and saw a footprint and that was it. I did the logo in my house with a bucket of black paint, a volunteer's foot and a piece of paper.

Tell us more about your forthcoming releases on other labels...
I have 12"s with Need For Mirrors coming on Liqweed Ganja and Shogun Ltd, Tilt and Vanity respectively. There's going to be a remix 12" on CIA from my album which has my remix of Walk Away and an Ulterior Motive remix of Robots, the tune I did with Bailey. However my main release is the All Good Things EP on Subtitles.

Apart from establishing Footprints my main goal for 2010 is to change people's perceptions of me being a just liquid DJ / producer. Subtitles is a label I had releases on ages ago and I wanted to return because it's got such a good reputation. People associate whatever TeeBee puts out with a certain sound and it definitely isn't liquid. I really want people to know that if you're booking Zero T or buying a Zero T track don't always expect it to be liquid.

Not that there's anything wrong with that style of course, it's just that I've done it to death and I've had enough of it for now. I just feel a bit saturated with that sound. My attitude now is I want to rock dancefloors as much as possible and not compromise my musical integrity.

What else do you have planned for the rest of 2010?
I've just signed on to do mix for a very big compilation series, can't reveal too much just yet but I'm very excited about it.

Apart from that I'm using this year to teach myself how to produce music other than drum & bass because it takes a lot of trial and error to get good at anything. I'm working on a bunch of projects of all different kinds of music and tempos with different artists and vocalists, live stuff as well. It feels a bit like starting all over again.

Tell us about the mix you've done for us...
It's a Footprints showcase so I've put on as much music that's coming on Footprints as possible but it's a fairly accurate representation of me playing a drum & bass set. I tried putting as much fresh material on there but that's not always my approach when I play out.

For instance, the first two tunes are from the 90s and I love dipping back into that era and picking out tunes. Recently I've been playing Grooverider's remix of Share The Fall and more than once some young guy has told me it's amazing and wanted to know what it is. I don't buy into the whole drum & bass thing of you have to play the freshest stuff all the time and I think that is dying out a bit as well.

Doing these type of mixes is quite difficult as you have to put on certain tracks because you want to promote your brand. I never have a plan when I'm DJing live, what I do is practice a few good intros to draw people in and then I just freestyle it and see what happens.

1) Favorite gig of the year so far?
DS: We started the new years off right in D.C. at a 3D/ Steez Promo party w/ Dieselboy , myself, Mason, Armanni & Sharpness ....and I’d have to say the Down Jones record release party in Philly last weekend was absolutely poppin’!

2) Favorite tune of the year so far?
DS: Favorite DNB tune(s) this year so far- Mix Master Doc- "Still Here", Reactiv-"the Watcher", and Dstar -"40k (Dstar & mason remix)! For dubstep I’d have to say Dr. P- "Sweetshop", the Angel "Kush (down jones rmx), and J.Rabbit "I’m so happy" on Reid speeds Play me label. .....But also, the secret weapon of Philly and Down Jones tag team partner End Boss.......big tingz coming on p5 Records out of Philly from him.

3) One piece of software you can't do without:

4) Will you be attending WMC?
DS:Yes! I will be attending the WMC! What’s up with some fishing and some yucca fries again!? oh...I’ll be performing at 'witness the sickness' 3/24, World of DnB-3/25 and Metalheadz / Bassdrive party 3/27......as of now ! Look me up for DNB sushi 2010!

5) What events are you most looking forward too at WMC?
DS: Always honored to play the headz party, always love bringing a demanding philly presence to the WODNB room and looking forward to Witness the Sickness as its Down Jones album release party and switch hats to Dstar vs Mason! i'll be tagging dubstep with End Boss that evening tho....don't miss his rare appearance!

5) What events are you most looking forward too at WMC?
WM:Definetly looking forward to the Stank Love party @ Jazid on the 24th. The monthly dnb event will see its first WMC appearance in 2010. A killer dnb, as well as dubstep line-up will please all who attend. The Bassdrive Showcase with support from the Metalheadz camp is going to again be a must for all the DNB headz and music lovers in general. I'll unfortunately miss Friday night because I'm traveling to Philly to play Droppin' Science @ The Arts Garage. If there are any other shows anyone thinks I should attend, hit me up!

6) What projects do you have lined up this year?
WM:This year's main focus will be on web releases; through the launch of a new website called, "Digital Aspirin" with Eduardo Rodriguez, and my own label "Miles A. Head". I'm also working on an EP with Stereotype. We recently made some noise (literally) with Random Movement who is on tour. I've recently been back to teaching guitar and music theory, privately.

7) What producers are you rating atm?
WM: So many to list...Kjell, D Bridge, Serum, Random Movement, Stereotype, Vapour, Bladerunner, Ed Oberon, Big Bud, Atlantic Connection, Martyn, Breakage, S.P.Y., Flaco, Spectra Soul, Dave Owen, Sabre, Bal, and I do unfortunately rate my own tracks, but not because I think I'm the shit, but because I enjoy the end product of self expression. (The list of producers goes on and on btw).

With producer Mike Genato behind her, Irene Merring takes her first steps into the spotlight with "Sumthin' New" her debut EP.
A New York native with roots in soul & R&B, Irene Merring's first official project crosses genres and tempo's to bring us a completely fresh & exclusive vibe. The promo EP features remixes by
Plus Move featuring Future Kid (my personal favorite), RVRSplay, Atlantic Connection and the original mix respectively. Its a dope promo, as previously mentioned the Plus Move remix is bangin', definitely a producer to watch out for.
Irene's main producer Mike Genato of Mathematics is overseeing her LP due out Spring of 2010 and from what I've heard so far; it's gonna be one of the hottest projects of next year.
I got a chance to sit down with Mike Genato to discuss this project, his projects and whatever else came up, read below...

1. Mike, most of us know you from Mathematics; talk a little bit about some of the other projects you've done and are doing?

Yea, I've branched out a little bit over the years. I helped establish the Cool Weirdo sound of alternative R&B artist, Peter Hadar. So far we've worked on 2 albums and 2 EPs together (the 2nd of which will be dropped at the top of 2010). Along with that, I'm still producing with Mathematics, doing some collabos and production with indie-soul cat, DJ Dhundee, as well as LA-based artist Julz the Huntress. To fill up the time, I compose music for TV commercials (Nike, New Balance, Adidas - among others). But right now, my main projects are 02 Seconds... (From Being Committed), and Irene Merring, who is an incredible artist and songwriter. We just finished writing, producing, and recording her debut album and are gearing up for its release in 2010.

2. Tell us more about Irene Merring, how did you guys meet & how did you end up in the studio?

At the time, Irene was singin over DnB sets around NYC. She was put in contact with James, my partner in Mathematics, and he did tell me about her. Of course, I'm the fuckin' worst with remembering shit so when she hit me up, I didn't know who she was. In the end though, I think that worked out for the better. When I checked out her music, it was on the strength of her and not by recommendation from James or anything like that. I was impressed by her voice and songwriting and felt a collaboration between us could take both of our sounds to another level. That same night I did a show with Peter Hadar - opening up for J*DaVeY. I invited her out, she came thru, we instantly vibed, and I knew right there we'd make an unstoppable team. A few weeks later, we stepped into the studio and started on this journey, exploring different sounds and emotions. From the get, our chemistry was really tight that we ended up writing most of the album together, from scratch. Then I found out she was actually the singer James was tellin' me about. Kinda like it was in the stars, or some shit like that.

3. Her project seems very diverse in terms of genre, was this a consious decision or did you guys just vibe with different styles and like the outcomes?

I think it was a bit of both. We knew we didn't want to make a record that would be pigeon-holed. And we also didn't want this project to primarily come from soul or R&B. We knew those vibes are always in us and will always come thru the music, so we decided to explore some our other influences - like Grunge, Industrial, Trip Hop, Drum&Bass and House. That said, we didn't go into every session with a specific style to hit. We just kept things open, vibed, and let it come out of us.

4. Whats Irenes musical background? Are you the first producer she's worked with this closely?

Irene has a very diverse set of influences, ranging from The Cure, The Black Crowes, to Lady Miss Kier, to Nirvana, to Mariah Carey and N'Dea Davenport, to Jenna G. As a singer and songwriter, she started early. She went to renowned schools LaGuardia HS of Performing Arts and Berklee College of Music, sang background for Mariah Carey, toured the East-Coast US as a front-woman to a Boston-based funk band, wrote with various R&B production teams including Crucial Keys, and as I mentioned earler, sang overtop Drum&Bass DJ sets. At the time I met Irene, she was predominantly seen as a soul/R&B artist, but feeling unfulfilled as such, she wanted to incorporate more of her other influences into her sound. That led to us using more of the Rock and Electronic music inspirations we both shared as foundations to her songs. As for me, I'm definitely not the first producer she's worked with, but I will say I am the producer that's taken her sound the furthest.

6. When's her album coming out and where can we find it?

We're gonna drop the album in Spring 2010, leading up to it with singles and remixes. All the releases will hit iTunes and Amazon worldwide. The first single, entitled Sumthin' New, will be in digital download stores in time for the holidays. It features remixes by Plus Move, RVRSplay, and your very own, Atlantic Connection.

"This is an older track that came out on a label called Lo:Cuts.
I think it was a very small pressing, and the label folded after its second release because its distro went bankrupt and I never heard from them again.
The vinyl hasn’t been available for a long time and I don’t even know what the label people are doing these days or where they are.

The breakworks are quite experimental to say the least, hehe, and something I wouldn’t do anymore, but I still love the overall vibe of the track.

Today I’m gonna spotlight a project I have with my home girl Julz (the huntress).
A brief introduction to Julz and then we’ll get to some music.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Julz the huntress has lived a life in the entertainment industry. Growing up in a Long Beach dance studio, Julz quickly went from student to teacher / choreographer / professional dancer and during the late 90’s started singing and writing lyrics, which would later become the foundation for her career.

Her first lyrical passion and notoriety came from her skills on the mic at drum and bass events. Julz’ abilities and energy on the mic rivaled established emcee’s and furthermore, succeeding in a male dominated scene, Julz proved herself a solid asset to the west coast music industry. Eventually Julz picked up several residencies from LA to San Diego and graced stages w. some of the most respected and well known DJ’s in the world; but this wasn’t enough. She took to the mic booth and started recording. Building relationships with other emcees, Julz went on to write and record with artists like Lady MC, Armanni Reign, Kemst, Dre & Whiskey Pete. [ The genre gates swung open ] By 2005 Julz was writing and recording multi-genre projects that included hip hop, breaks, deep house & electro as well as performing live shows under her signature production group “BASS BRAT”.

So lets skip forward to 2007 when I met Julz. We were introduced by a mutual friend at an event in Orange County and we instantly clicked. I was currently working on my 1st album and was looking for a female emcee to take on a track I had written titled “Around the World”. Julz was up for the challenge and took to the booth collaborating with UK legend Lady MC and what they came with, was nothing short of amazing.

Julz and I continued to work building up a collection of material, and around mid 2008 we decided to give our project a name and Cruel Rumour was born.

What’s the rumour all about?
Well, its what we live, is where we are, it’s a play on the nonsense world Los Angeles can spit at you on a daily basis where everything is hyped, everything glam, everything opulent, a bit fake and you’re just a bystander. What’s our sound?
That’s hard to describe, we go with the flow; sometimes its booty hip hop “Sk8 Shop” sometimes it’s fluid house music “Disco Trip” but whatever genre we knock out it’s guaranteed to carry a solid flow and memorable riffs.

"The boys have been locked away in the studio for about a year now and things are finally shaping up. Expect a double CD and yet-to-be-decided vinyl format. As far as a release date, they don't want to compromise on anything so a deadline hasn't been set. This is also why no tracks have been in circulation in the scene, as they want to avoid some of the tunes being rinsed to fuck by the time it gets released!

For followers of both artists this album will be a surprise. If you expect Anatomy part 2 you'll be very far off the mark. Re-inventing themselves completely but still retaining the perfectionist approach to production they both share, the album will be a true adventure beyond the signature sound they developed on their last LP. Whilst they have been exploring a diverse range of DnB styles, Calyx has been fine tuning his immense musical skills, while TeeBee has been taking a trip down memory lane and rediscovered his love for in-depth beat programming. The most exciting progression for them both is the venture into other musical forms like House, Minimal, Techno, Breaks, Hip Hop, and more experimental sounds / time-signatures / tempos, as well as working more with vocals.

With a total of about 50 projects/tracks in varying stages of completion, they are currently trying to tie it all together, finding the right 16-20 trax for the LP and finishing them off. Exciting!!!"

There is also a Spor remix of "Make your Choice" coming in the future.

One of LA's biggest events of 2009 comes to fruition this Sunday. OLD SCHOOL JAMS is one of THE most talked about shows on the Westcoast. Produced by Erin Monahan @ Nederlander Events this show is going to be like no other. I got the opportunity to sit down with Erin and find out just what it takes to produce a show of this scale....

1) So Erin, the buzz is this event. Tell us how you came up with the concept for OSJ?

I have a friend named Rodger Clayton who was a founding member of this group called Uncle Jamm's Army. They threw all the biggest hip hop parties on the West Coast back in the day, and I work with him as my co-promoter on a lot of the hip hop and R&B shows I do at the Grove of Anaheim. We wanted to do a show together at the Greek and create a line-up that would reflect the beginnings of hip hop and freestyle music in the early 80s. I remember when I was a little kid I was really obsessed with movies like Breakin, Krush Groove and Wild Style and always wanted to be in the world of DJs, MCs, breakdancing and graffiti. I've just always loved the culture and history of hip hop and I think it's going to be a really fun, hilarious night.

2) How hard was it to get all those acts booked?

Most acts have one agent they deal with but hip hop is a strange exception, for some reason a lot of acts don't go through just one agent, they have managers and go through several agents. So I actually did this show through a middle buyer that booked all the acts through all the different managers.

3) Do you think any of them will be performing new material? or All throwback?

They each might sneak in one new track but they will mostly perform their throwback hits!

4) You're showcasing something rarely seen in LA, what made you do an event like this as oppsed to just booking some hot current DJs and live acts and calling it a day?

My co-worker and I book about 100 shows a year at the Grove of Anaheim, everything from Merle Haggard to Too Short. This is my first show at the Greek and I'm not the main talent buyer so it had to be something different I could bring to the table on my own. I would love to book some electronica acts at the Greek but the capacity is 5800 and it's seated, so it's limited what works within that genre. I'd love to be able to help get some acts like Groove Armada, Basement Jaxx or Kraftwerk at the Greek eventually. I'd also love to do a 90's hip hop line-up with an act like Tribe Called Quest or a West Coast hip hop show.

5) How long did it take to plan an event like this and what goes into the development of an event of this size?

I booked it in February and put it onsale in May. Planning an event like this involves everything from confirming the show, sending out contracts, creating the flyer, organizing radio promotions, street promotions, creating an online campaign, advancing the show, creating a TV spot, etc. I did most of the flyering myself over the past five months with the help of friends. Thankfully I have an amazing marketing department, box office and production team at my company to help me. It's been a lot harder and more stressful than I thought it would be but it's been an amazing learning experience.

6) For those who don't know, tell us about Nederlander events, what other events have you guys done?

Nederlander has been around a long time, we have a Broadway division that does most of the Broadway events in New York as well as at the Pantages in LA, and then we are the exclusive operator of the Greek Theatre in LA, The Grove of Anaheim, The Santa Barbara Bowl and the San Jose Civic. We've also done events at UCLA, in San Diego, Tuscon, etc. The Greek is our main venue though and we have some good shows coming up – Phoenix, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Pet Shop Boys to name a few.

7) Who are you most looking forward to seeing this Sunday?

I'm actually most excited for Ready for the World, they have so many songs I love. I'm also excited to just see the crowd go off when Melle Mel & The Furious Five perform "The Message" and "White Lines" as well as Kurtis Blow do "The Breaks" and "If I Ruled the World." Those infamous opening beats are just gonna make everyone go crazy. Last but not least Peanut Butter Wolf is going to do a VJ set and I'm pretty stoked about that - I think he is gonna bust out the jams and people are gonna freak out.

SAM XL TALKS PRODUCTION, BASSFACE & HIS LIFE IN MUSIC.

This week we're featuring SAM XL's bday bash at BASSFACE featuring Benny Page. Sam XL is an originator of the LA music scene. With roots stretching back into the late 80's. One of the founding fathers of the LA electronic music scene, Sam's contributions to the community are unparalleled; running nights, labels, record stores as well as furthering his own career as a DJ and producer. I caught up with Sam for a bit to chat about where he's been and where he's going.

1) You've been involved in the LA music scene for quite some time, can you tell us about what you've done, what you're at and where you're going?

This weekend I celebrate my 41st birthday and I've been involved with the underground music scene in Socal since 89, Holy crap...that's 20 years now!!! From Djing at event's, throwing event's, weeklies, + i've owned two record store's (Soma), then was blessed to run the infamous BEATNONSTOP (West Coast underground Mecca on Melrose) which then turned into the Temple of Boom which I ran with my partner Hazen. I also was an artist on and ran several record labels out of Beatnonstop recording as the Coastal Commission on P.C.H records, Seductive, Beatnonstop, Pacific House Brand, Pacific Traxx and XXXL/Crimescene Unit & Troubled Mindz on Crimescene Recs...so that's some of the stuff I've been involved in the past.

More recently I shifted my energies to a night and building a Soundsystem called Pure Filth that I started with friends in this basement speakeasy in Dtown called the Higgin's Gallery. This night/soundsystem became the foundation for the Dubstep scene in Los Angeles's/Socal area and the platform for what we have today with parties like BASSFACE & Smog etc. The BASSFACE brand was formed about a year and a 1/2 ago to encompass all forms of underground music and not just be strictly dubstep like the PURE FILTH event's...there's also a Pure Filth Audio record label in the works with material from myself & DZ, 6Blocc, Gunjack, DJ G & many more...The commitment to the Soundsystem came after the phenomenal response we got at Higgin's Gallery from the Dj's/Dancers alike to what we were doing with sound manipulation. After Djing for years in L.A I got fed up with shitty sound, arrogant soundmen and just terrible conditions for Dj's in general. I've now tried to apply what I've learned over this expanse of time to help create a dj/dancer friendly environment that is underground...but not Ghetto...this is what I am committed to alongside exposing people to music/performers/producers that I feel are really pushing the envelope sonically and mentally through out the globe.

2) Having watched the scene grow over the years (electronic music overall) would you say it's in a healthy state these days?

Yes...I'd say we're in a renaissance of sort's.....I haven't seen the electronic dance scene this healthy since about 91/92...a genuine excitement from all sides..all genres...dancers/dj's/producers/promoters alike...I'm really happy I stuck it out through what was a drought of filtered french disco house for many years that almost drove me out of the scene!!!

3) So tell us about Saturday night, its your bday (happy bday) and its gonna be a huge party. How'd you choose the line up? whats the sound gonna be like? what styles of music?

I chose the line up (as I always try to) by placing artist's together that I feel will compliment one another and form a cohesive musical journey over the evening...the Sound will be proper, crisp mid's and high's that don't tear your head off and Bass that might blow your sock's off!!! The style's of Subase music will range from Dubby stuff with Remo to Experi-mental dance by Jaybird to Electro, 808, D n B from you & Julz. Me and Pablo will bring some up front Dub's and then Benny will come with his signature Ragga flavor's no doubt before 6 Blocc bring's that L.A GhettoBass that is a sound/style all of his own refined like a fine wine over many years and many parties!

4) So lets talk about your own production, what do you have going on and who are you working with?

This last year or so I've been fortunate to work alongside Technical Itch forming a production team called SMUT. Our first choon "Badman Place" got licensed to Skream's "Watch the Ride" mix Cd. I also have worked with Breakage on a toon that was slated to be picked up by Deep Medi but when Jame's (Breakage) signed to Digital Soundboy for an album deal and everything got put on hold, look's like the toon will come out on PFA (Pure Filth Audio with Warrior Queen spitting over it, keep ya ears to the ground!) More recently me and DZ from Canada have been working together remixing Ray Keith's classic "Something Out There" (which can be found here for FREEEEEEE!) AND A 12" called "Cotton Candy" that just got signed to MRK1's Contagious label out of Manchester.

So I have to say, when I found out my favorite Latin house DJ was from Slovakia, I was honestly shocked. Isn't Slovakia cold? Not sure, but it really doesn't matter because this guy is pumping out some tropical deliciousness. In fact, in my recent excursions to the Caribbean, I've put every one of this guys mixes on my ipod to enjoy while sipping blended drinks and watching beautiful caribbean bodies stroll by.

His names Too Mass, and aside from the mixes i've found by him on http://www.deephousemix.com/ I really don't know much more.. He doesn't seem to have a myspace, facebook or any other social network site created. Either way, you can download all his mixes via deephousemix.com, they're essential.

"I have been involved with music since my early school age. I used to only listen to music... After a period of time, I started to dedicate more time to music and spin at various events as a DJ playing various kinds of music.It was in 1999 when everything changed, house music has found me. I was interested in everything about house music - house music genres, DJs etc. I have listened to many radio shows and read magazines about dance/house music.I have met a lot of new friends with whom I later played at regular house music events. I was a resident DJ for about 2 years in a local club with DJs RUMcajZ & MASH. We also used to play at various parties outside of our home town.I have been amazed and influenced by Caribbean and Brazil elements in house music. And because of that, my musical taste have been leaning towards Latin house music in past years. 1) Bud, long time, how you been?

ez Westbay , yea im good thanks , busy , happy , life is sweet !

2) So you've just wrapped a new album, tell us
about the project?

Well it's my 5th album , 3rd on my own label , SOUNdTRAX .. I'm real happy with it, feel like i've moved on with what i'm doing , but still with the same vibes ..

3) What seperates this from previous albums you've
produced?

I think it's the most dancefloor freindly album so far , no real concept or anything behind this one , just a taste of where i am in 2009..
Been working on stripping down my sound too , using fewer elements but trying to create a bigger sound . .

4) Your last album had a wealth of guest featurings,
did you take the same route with this or keep it solo?

Not as many guests as the Fear of Flying project , but saying that i am very proud to have a Utah Jazz remix on there as well as a colab with FURNEY..
The album ends with a song i wrote with my MC , Mike Romeo on vocals.

5) Is the album purely d&b?

Its an 11 track CD and 3 x 12" vinyl , of the 11 , 8 are straight up dNb , one jazzy , afro kinda 6/8 thing and a dUb track and a reggae song .

6) How long did it take you to write?

Round about 3months in total i think .. Hard to say , had to write it inbetween tours and weekends away etc. It wasn't one long studio session , find that hard to do these days . Always so much keeping me busy . Label , tours , kids eTc...

7) Whats your favorite track off the album?

Hmm , i'm happy with all of it but if i had to choose i think it would be GUIDING STAR , the song.. I wrote the lyrics while i was staying at Mike Romeo's place in Frankfurt..We were just jamming some ideas for a dNb track , he sang some phrase that sparked an idea ... I grabbed a pen + paper , rolld a fat1 , sat on the balcony for a bit and had this image of a group of Rastas up in the hills of Jamaica , sat smoking sum shit and their Nyabinghi drums .. So that was the idea behind it and i asked Mike to sing it with that image in his head.. It was originally gonna be @ dNb tempo but i halved it and kept it all acoustic , there's nothing electronic in there at all.. So , yea , thats my fave . and of course watch out for the dNb re-rUb ...soon come !

8) When's the album tour kick off?

Started already 2bh , off to Bucharest this weekend , with Mike , first of many launch parties.. Back for a few days then another launch party in Belgrade, Serbia.. My g/friend over there gona have our baby in the next few weeks too so that's gona be an even biggger launch party !
London launch party is on 26th...

9) What do you want people to know about Soundtrax ?

SOUNdTRAX , for those that don't know , UK based dNb label 5yrs in the game , maybe longer , hard to remember.. Releasing a steady stream of quality , musical dNb , from some well established names on the scene as well as bringin thru some of the new blood which i believe is vital to keep the scene alive . for more info peep the website :
